Irwin M. Caplan, passed away Tuesday, December 17 surrounded by family. He was born in Houston in 1925 to Louis and Lena Dow Caplan. Irwin was a lifelong member of Congregation Beth Yeshurun. He graduated from San Jacinto High School and soon thereafter joined the U.S. Army and fought in WW2. Irwin was a Corporal having fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a patriot and very proud of his service to his country. After his discharge from the Army, he continued his education at the University of Houston obtaining a degree in Business. He joined Foley's and became a Buyer of millinery and later women's coats and suits. In 1965, he left Foley's, obtained his Real Estate Broker's license and started Data Management and Realty. He built, brokered and managed commercial real estate right up until the time of his passing.
Irwin married the former Ada Berkman in 1950. She was the greatest passion of his life - an enduring love affair for over 63 years. Theirs was not only one of great respect and admiration but a "team" in marriage and business. There was little Irwin would do or say without his "Ada" by his side. Together they started a family of five children, 14 grandchildren and a great grandson. There was never a conversation whereby he didn't have something to say about an accomplishment or event having to do with one of his children or grandchildren.
As important as his family, Irwin was deeply devoted to his Judaism and Jewish education. He was observant - relishing the Sabbath and holidays, a trait he learned from his parents and grandparents. He was proud to have served as President of Cong Beth Yeshurun as well as its many committees. He was also past President of Herzl Lodge Bnai Brith.
Irwin is survived by his devoted wife, Ada and his children - Robert and Alyse Caplan, Dr. Elaine Caplan of Austin, Cherice and Howard Gerson of Kansas City, Suzanne and Robert Goldstein; his grandchildren - Courtney, Kevin and Elizabeth Caplan, Rachel and John Erikson, Seth, Grace, Ben, Rose, and Sam Caplan, Aron, Molly, Lindsey, and Brian Gerson; and his great grandson, Elijah Erikson; His brother and sister'n law, Dr. Harold and Shirley Caplan as well as his many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved son, Dr. Steve Caplan and his sister, Zelda C. Weiner.
The family is grateful to Dr. Seth Lerner and his staff at Baylor Neurology, Dr. Brian Goldfarb, and the dedicated staff on the 12th floor of Fondren Tower at Methodist Hospital.
Funeral services will take place Friday, December 20, at 11:00 at Congregation Beth Yeshurun, 4525 Beechnut Blvd followed by burial at Beth Yeshurun cemetery on N. Post Oak Rd. His grandchildren will honor him as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Cong Beth Yeshurun, Seven Acres Jewish Senior Care, Jewish Family Service or .
