Jean Marie Batiste-Murray was born May 18, 1948, in Eunice, LA to Arthur and Doris Batiste. Educated by the St. Landry Parish Public School system, Jean graduated from Charles Drew High School. She attended Southern University at Baton Rouge, as well as Texas Southern University, after enlisting in the U.S. Navy. Jean moved to Houston and became a self-taught, extremely competitive tennis player. She worked at NASA for 35+ years as a logistics specialist and kept a healthy balance between work, tennis, family / friends, and her responsibility as an incredible single mother.

Jean married her best friend Victor C. Murray in 1994, and was a committed and dedicated Mother to Stacey Batiste. On Sunday, May 26, at 12:30pm, Jean transitioned from her earthly home with family and friends at her side. Her memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 8, at 12:00pm at Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church.
