Jeremy Scott Tucker Obituary
Jeremy Scott
Tucker, beloved son, brother, grandson, uncle, and friend died peacefully on September 6, 2013 in Houston, Texas at the age of 38 surrounded by his loving family and Rabbi. He will always be remembered for his passion for life, his loving kindness for others, his quirky sense of humor, and his courage in the face of adversity.
Jeremy was born in Cleveland, Ohio on March 20, 1975 to Margaret and Jeffrey Tucker. He graduated from Bellaire High School in 1993 with highest honors. He attended Yale University where he became a gifted writer and was awarded the Mifflin Prize for outstanding Senior Essay. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Summa Cum Laude. Outside the classroom, Jeremy spent hundreds of hours volunteering at a neighborhood school and developed a creative writing program so other Yale students could also volunteer there. On campus, for pure enjoyment, he became the captain of the ballroom dance team. Although Jeremy knew he wanted to become a doctor to help children, he spent the next two years in Phoenix, Arizona as a teacher with Teach For America in an underserviced community. Jeremy then went on to Harvard Medical School where he graduated in 2004. While in medical school, Jeremy was so focused on the importance of caring for all of his patients and their families that he took it upon himself to learn Spanish so he could better communicate with a more diverse group of people.
In the summer of 2005, at the beginning of his second year of residency at Texas Children's Hospital, Jeremy was assaulted by a cancerous brain tumor and underwent surgery that left him cognitively whole but physically disabled. Although Jeremy defeated the cancer, he faced substantial challenges in the years that followed. In spite of the tremendous obstacles, Jeremy became a published author in the fall of 2011. His book, Before A Canyon, was his masterpiece and also a demonstration of Jeremy's never-ending drive to accomplish his goals.
Jeremy is survived by his mother Margaret Tucker, his father Jeffrey Tucker, his sister Jennie Tucker and her husband Josh Levin, his grandmother Betty Tucker, his uncle Rick Rosen, his aunt Janet Rosen, and his niece Hailey Levin. The family wishes to thank caregivers Victoree Berry, Eric Swain, Freddy Brown, and Travon Black. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Jeremy Tucker Memorial Fund for Teach For America (www.jeremytuckermemorialfund.org). Funeral services will be at Congregation Beth Israel, 5600 N. Braeswood Blvd, at 2pm on Monday, September 9 with Rabbi David Lyon officiating.
