As a youngster Joel moved between Oklahoma, Texas and Louisiana before making Houston his home for over 30 years. While in Houston he attended Spring Woods High School and based on his near perfect SAT scores and school performance was granted a waiver to attend Rice University without graduating from high school. He also attended the University of Houston. Joel later worked at the Houston Post and KUHT-TV among other employers. Joel had several interests in his life, not the least of which was writing. He loved his work as a journalist and always hoped to write a novel. He had a strong love of music and had accumulated a collection of over 400 vinyl albums. Joel also had a fascination with computers and technology. Included in his possessions were some of the very early laptop computers along with miles of cables, cords and connecting wires. Joel also had a passion for politics and had been active in the Harris county Democratic Party. While in Houston, he attended the Unity Church of Christianity and later he became a member of Hope Unitarian Church in Tulsa.
He is survived by his sister Julia Rennie Allen and her husband Jeff, of Jenks, OK, nephew Taylor Rennie Allen and his wife Lauryn, of Winter Garden, FL, and niece Rebecca Kathleen Allen of Auburn, AL.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, November 26 at 10:00 a.m. at Hope Unitarian Church, located at 8232 S. Sheridan Road, Tulsa, OK. If you would like to honor Joel's life, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Hope Unitarian Church.
