John W. Morrow, Jr.,age 77, passed away on Sunday, the 6th of October 2013, in Austin after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Houston on the 18th of November 1935. |
A life-long Houstonian, John graduated from San Jacinto High School in 1954 and married his high school sweetheart, Constance C. LeCorgne in 1955. He attended Rice University and held a BBA degree from the University of Houston. He was a Texas Funeral Director Association past president and Commonwealth Institute of Funeral Service regent and treasurer. A licensed funeral director for over 40 years, he began his distinguished career in 1957 working in his family's funeral home, Settegast-Kopf Funeral Directors in downtown Houston. When the firm was sold to Service Corporation International in 1970, he became vice-president of the company eventually heading its Central Region. In 1990, he held the position of president and chief operating officer of the funeral division until he earned the position of executive vice-president heading up corporate development. He retired from SCI in 2000. During his career, he traveled extensively and had so many friends all across the country.
To know John was to love him and if you were his friend, it was for life. After his retirement, he and his wife travelled the world. He stayed in touch with his many friends and met frequently for lunch with his San Jacinto High School football teammates. He was an avid sports fan, supporting the Owl Club and the RBI Club at Rice. He was a season ticket holder for the Texans and the Astros.
John's first love was his family. He is preceded in death by his mother and father, Lorena and John William Morrow, Sr.; and his son, Michael. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Connie; sons, John W. Morrow, III, and Scott Morrow; daughter, Kellye Babin and Husband David; grandchildren, Adrienne Morrow, Trent Morrow, John "Jack" Prostko, Cammie Prostko and Jake Babin; brothers, Clint Morrow and wife Carol; and Robert Morrow and wife Sandra; and his three nieces and a nephew.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o'clock in the afternoon until seven o'clock in the evening on Wednesday, the 9th of October, in the library and grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
The funeral service is to be conducted at eleven o'clock in the morning, on Thursday, the 10th of October, in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church, 5300 Main Street in Houston, where Dr. Jim Birchfield, Senior Pastor, is to officiate.
The interment service is to follow, via an escorted cortege, at Memorial Oaks Cemetery, 13001 Katy Freeway in Houston.
Those honored to serve as casket bearers during the service include Robert Waltrip, DeWitt Morrow, Lanny Glick, Mike Wells, Alan Finger, Roy Elledge, Perry Waughtal, Louis Macey, Frank Bantle, Gordon Earhardt and John Burleson.
Honored to serve as honorary casket bearers are the seniors of the 1953 San Jacinto football team, "The Band of Brothers".
Immediately following the interment, all are invited to greet the family during a reception at Montebello Condominiums, 1100 Uptown Park Boulevard in Houston.
