Jose Perez Obituary
José Bernardo Pérez, Ph.D., passed away peacefully on January 19, 2013, after a battle with lung cancer, surrounded by his beloved family. Dr. Pérez was born in Villagarcía de Arousa of Pontevedra, in Galicia, Spain on September 12, 1948. He received his undergraduate degree in Humanities (Filosofía y Letras) in Granada, Spain in 1972, and shortly thereafter traveled to the United States, where he pursued and received his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa (1982). He devoted his life to teaching Spanish literature and culture at Rice University for nearly 33 years, with an intense passion and a never-ending thirst for knowledge. In 2010 he was awarded the prestigious Nicolas Salgo Distinguished Teacher Award from Rice University.
He always lived with his heart in two places, Spain and Houston, Texas. He was a thoughtful, patient, loving and caring spouse, father, and professor. J.B. will forever be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor, flair for cuisine and entertaining, and his love of life and learning. He is survived and will be greatly missed by his wife Gloria, daughter Cristina, son Daniel, sister Estrella, brother-in-law Pedro, niece Susana, his stepchildren and grandchildren, and his extended family in Spain.
A visitation will be held Wednesday, January 23, from five until eight o'clock in the evening at the Bradshaw-Carter Home, 1734 W. Alabama, Houston, TX 77098. A mass and memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 24, beginning at 7 o'clock in the evening at the Rice University Chapel in the Rice Memorial Center.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Rice University (Attn: J. Bernardo Pérez Memorial Scholarship Fund), for students to study in Spain. Donations may be sent to: Rice University, Office of Development, MS-81, P.O. Box 1892, Houston, TX 77251-1892.
