Joseph R. Dark, died on Sunday afternoon February 17, 2013, less than 2 weeks before his 78th birthday. Joe was born in Longview, Texas, the son of the late William M. and Nellie Henderson Dark. Joe leaves behind his brother Bill Dark, in whose wedding he served as best-man, and longtime friend and business partner Bill Broussard, and many other friends, to remember with pleasure, the many happy times spent with him in work and leisure. Joe was a flyer. His happiest days were spent as a Naval Aviator and as a Captain for Continental Airlines. After attending Texas A&M for a year and Kilgore College for another year, Joe enrolled in the Naval Air Cadet Program at Pensacola, Florida. He was commissioned Ensign in the U.S. Navy in Corpus Christi, Texas in 1957 and assigned to Attack Squadron 54 at Naval Air station Miramar, San Diego, California. In 1966, Joe joined Continental Airlines and flew as co-pilot and then pilot for over 20 years, both domestically and overseas.
After completing active duty in the Navy, Joe settled in Houston, where he entered the real estate business as a salesman with Ben Ward and Company, having gotten to know Ben at St Andrews Presbyterian Church; Joe having been raised in Alpine Presbyterian Church in Longview, Texas which was founded by his mother's ancestors in 1880. Joe obtained his Real Estate Broker's license and brokered properties primarily in the Houston area and also acquired apartments and commercial properties, primarily within the 610 Loop, for his own account. How owned and operated these properties with his business partner, Bill Broussard.
Throughout his elementary and high school years, Joe attended Judson School, Longview, Texas where he played football, played the clarinet in the band and forever made his classmates laugh. Joe shared the home chores with his brother, such as tending the garden and orchard, milking the cow and feeding the pig. Joe leaves to remember him, his nephews Bill Dark and Ron Dark and niece Cindy Hayley all of the Conroe-Woodlands, Texas area.
Joe's family appreciates beyond words the kind attention and assistance given by Micaela Briones and Harrison Foy over the last year as Joe's heart condition worsened.
