Luther Campbell Obituary
Luther Clyde "Bob" Campbell, Jr., 89, passed away on February 5, 2013 at his home in The Woodlands, Texas. He was born on December 20, 1923 in Wolfpit, Kentucky to Luther and Vernon (Calmes) Campbell. Bob grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
He graduated from Bordentown Military Academy in Bordentown, New Jersey in 1942. After high school he attended The United States Military Academy at West Point, where he received a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering. In 1945, his cadet company at USMA, the 1ST infantry division, led the procession at Franklin Delano Roosevelt's funeral. In 1949, he received a masters degree in Public Affairs from Syracuse University.
Bob served in the army for 12 years during which he participated in the post-World War II occupation of Germany and Japan. Additionally, he taught economics, European history and International Relations at West Point, and served as Aide de Camp to General John E. Dahlquist. He retired in 1954, achieving the rank of Captain. Bob's post military career was in the investment business until his retirement in 1994. Bob married Jacqueline Hooper in 1956 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They were happily married for 56 years.
He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. Possessed with a quick wit, Bob shared his love of music, movies, politics, and the Dallas Cowboys (not necessarily in that order) with anyone who was willing to engage in a lively discussion. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Vernon Campbell, his brother, William C. Campbell and niece, Catherine Rhorer.
Bob is survived by his spouse Jackie of The Woodlands, Texas; his son and daughters Ann and (Gary) Doerries of The Woodlands, Texas, (Tammy) and Doug Campbell of Tomball, Texas, Marcia and (Pat) Nicholson of Austin, Texas, and Caroline Rodgers of Lewisville, Texas; his niece and nephew Melodie and (Paul) Phillips of Champion, Pennsylvania and (Connie) and Bill Campbell of Eugene, Oregon.
A memorial service will be held at The Woodlands United Methodist Church, Robb Chapel, 2200 Lake Woodlands Drive, The Woodlands, Tx 77381 at 3:00, February 13, 2013 preceded by a viewing at 2:00. Burial will follow at noon February 14, 2013 at Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, Tx 77038
