Mary Joe White, 67, of Houston, died peacefully at home Tuesday. She was born to Walter James and Dorothy Williams, March 14, 1947 in McAllen, TX. Mary Joe received a BSN from Baylor University in 1969, followed by a MSN from Texas Women's University, and a PhD from Texas A&M University.
Mary Joe was an Associate Professor at the University of Texas Houston School of Nursing and served there as faculty for over 35 years. She was known for her innovative approach to nursing education, including her work helping to develop the RN-to-BSN and accelerated BSN programs at the School of Nursing. She served as a professor, advisor, mentor, and friend to students and faculty alike. Her caring spirit and passion for education will be her legacy passed on to the thousands of students she has touched over the years as they continue their nursing careers.
Mary Joe was an active member of South Main Baptist Church. She loved spending time with her dogs, and took them to the park every day. She was also actively involved in rescuing her daughter's dog from Iraq in 2008. Mary Joe was an avid fan of the Houston Oilers and Texans, and enjoyed watching games with her family and friends.
Mary Joe is survived by her husband, Howell White; her children, Margaret (Maggie) and Mitchell White of Houston; and her sister, Farley Ann French of Boerne, TX. She is also survived by three nieces and a nephew.
The family wishes to thank the faculty and staff of MD Anderson Cancer Center, Gloria Williams, and Lillie Flenory for their superb care and compassion throughout her illness.
