Mary Smith Obituary
Mary Margaret O'Harra (Irish) Smith passed away on May 5, 2013 at the age of 86.
Irish was born in Chicago, Illinois on September 15, 1926 to Clifton J. O'Harra and Erma Rand O'Harra. She attended the Francis Parker School in Chicago. The family moved back to Carthage, Illinois to the O'Harra family law practice. She attended the University of Texas in Austin where she studied archeology and was an accomplished equestrian and a member of the University Hunter and Jumper team.
While at The University, she met and fell in love with Joe H. Smith. They married in 1947, and eventually moved to Houston where they raised their family of three children. Irish was secretary of the Joe H Smith Company and helped her husband grow the company during the early years. Irish was actively involved in her community as secretary of the Southampton Civic Club, secretary of the Waller County Historical Society and a docent for the 1830 Liendo Plantation of Waller County. She loved the piano and especially Rachmaninoff - she loved a challenge.
Irish was an animal lover - especially horses and dogs. She was an AKC licensed judge and traveled all over the nation judging Irish Setters. She became President of the Irish Setter Club of Texas and was on the Board of the Irish Setter Club of America. She established Limerick Lane Kennels, a producer of national Irish Setter Champions.
Irish is preceded in death by her sister, Nancy E. O'Harra (Carthage, Illinois), daughter Cynthia S. Smith and her son Kent H. Smith. She is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Joe H Smith; her son Christopher Sean Smith (and wife, Helen) and Kent's wife Carolyn; Grandchildren Stirling Alexander Smith (and wife Jackie); Aubrey O'Harra Smith Valadez (and husband Mario); Alyssa Haskell Smith; Charles Clarke Smith; and Great Grandson Maxx Valadez.
Memorial Services will be held May 15, 2013 at 2 P.M. at Palmer Memorial Episcopal Church at 6221 Main, in the shadow of the Texas Medical Center, Houston.
