Crandall died September 3, 2013, in Houston, Texas. Nell was born September 17, 1923, to Morris Cottle and Zola Clements Cottle in the small town of Moran, Texas. She graduated from Moran High School in 1940 and from the University of Texas in 1944 with a degree in Business Administration. She went to work for the Humble Oil & Refining Company in Houston, Texas, where she met John Roderic Crandall. They were married from 1948 until John's death in 2004.
Preceding Nell in death were her parents; her husband John; and one brother, Jerry Cottle. Surviving are her brother James and his wife Julie; her sister-in-law, Jean Cottle; several nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
Nell and her husband were active in the Institute of International Education and were host family to three different Japanese doctors and their wives. She was a passionate gardener and a member of the Houston Area Daylily Society. Four daylilies she hybridized are registered with the American Hemerocallis Society. Nell's big hobby was collecting artifacts of the Indians of the Southwest: pots, baskets, jewelry and rugs. She loved to play bridge with her friends and 42 with her brothers, and she enjoyed many trips with her husband John on their sailboat, the Nejo.
For those desiring, memorial contributions in Nell's name may be made to their favorite charities.
