Norma Fredenburg Besch was born August 26, 1931 in Bainbridge, New York and died on December 27, 2013 in Houston, Texas. She was a mother of two, a fabulous cook, opera lover, bird watcher and gardener as well as an accomplished researcher and clinical chemist. She graduated magna cum laude from Syracuse University in 1953 and received her Ph.D. from University of Iowa in 1956. Her first faculty appointment was in the Department of Psychiatry, at The Ohio State University. She then took a faculty appointment in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas, in July 1968. She retired from Baylor after 26 years July 1994. An advocate for reproductive rights, she served on the board of directors of Planned Parenthood of Houston, Texas from 1973-1989. She is survived by her son, Konrad N. Besch, her daughter, Kirsten C. Besch, her grandson, Kevin D. Lama, her loving caretaker, Noemi Velasquez, her brother, Charles Fredenburg, brother in law, Steve Besch, sisters-in-law: Sharon Fredenburg, Vianne Meyerhoff, Greta Besch, Adrienne Besch, and Lenida Walker, nephews: Mark Fredenburg, Karl Fredenburg, and Kristian Fredenburg; nieces: Kristine Fredenburg, Jennifer Jennings, Julie Gonzales, Margo Walker and many loving friends. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2014 at 12pm at Guadalajara Hacienda, 9799 Katy Fwy, Houston, Texas 77024.
