Peter Carl Wittenberg, 73, passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 7 after a lengthy battle with severe heart disease. He was born on July 24, 1940 in Evanston, Illinois.
After graduating from Highland Park High School in Dallas, he spent two years attending Stephen F. Austin State College, where he majored in journalism. He completed his education at the University of Illinois, where he received his Bachelor's Degree in Communications in 1963, ranking in the top quarter of his class.
Mr. Wittenberg worked as a reporter for several small newspapers after graduation including the Sherman Democrat, The McAllen Monitor, and The Wichita Eagle. Finally he landed a job as a reporter for the Houston Post in 1969. During his career as a journalist he was on the scene of the JFK assassination, reported the devastation of Hurricane Alicia in 1983, and covered the rescue of Baby Jessica in 1987. He served in several positions for the paper, finishing as copy editor when the paper folded in 1995. He opted for early retirement and spent the rest of his years exploring his beloved adopted home state of Texas, writing short stories, and spending time with his grandchildren, who called him "Papu".
His parents, Pauline and Armond Wittenberg, precede him in death. He is survived by his wife, Ofelia Wittenberg, sister Susan Jeffers; her sons Mark and Chris Airington, son Peter Wittenberg Jr; his daughter Chloe Wittenberg, son William Wittenberg; his children Luke and Giselle Wittenberg, and his step children, Susan Valle Guillen; her children Ramsey Perez and Rebecca Guillen; Martha Valle; her children Maritza Valle and Spencer Valle, Tomas Valle, Felipe Valle, and Dan Valle; his three sons Justin Laroche, Cody Valle, and Brayden Valle.
