Robert Lee Holt, 87, of Plantersville, formally of Houston, died Saturday, October 12, 2013, at Hospice Brazos Valley Inpatient Facility in Bryan, Texas. He was born January 20, 1926, in Houston to Cicero Allen and Sophronia Elvira Pritchett Holt and grew up in Shady Acres (The Heights).|
Robert was a 1943 graduate of Reagan High School and served his country as a member of "The Greatest Generation" during WWII in the U.S. Marine Corp. Upon his return from the war he went to work as a distributor for the Houston Chronicle. It was there that he met Pat Carmena and they were married on April 29, 1949. He graduated from the University of Houston in 1951 and retired in 1986 after 39 years from the Houston Chronicle. In July of 1972 he and Pat built their dream home on the "7H Ranch" in Plantersville. He became involved in numerous organizations and was a charter member and founder of the Plantersville-Stoneham Volunteer Fire Department and the Dobbin-Plantersville Water S.C., past president of the Navasota Theatre Alliance, life member of Navasota VFW Post 4006 and Grimes County Crime Stoppers to name a few. With encouragement from his son, Grant, Robert graduated from the Texas Funeral Service Institute and became a funeral director in 1991 working with Grant at Lindley-Robertson-Holt Funeral Home. He enjoyed his retirement working his cows and riding his tractor as well as traveling. In 2004 he achieved his goal of having visited all 50 states. A man of high moral standards, he believed in doing what was honest and right no matter how hard it might be or what others might think, a gift he instilled in each of his children.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Allen Holt, sister and brother-in-law, Pauline and George Polk, Sr. and daughter-in-law, JoAnn P. Holt.
Survivors include his loving wife of 64 years, Pat Holt of Plantersville; children, Tim Holt and wife, Martha, of Houston, Charlotte Bossart and husband, Pat, of Plantersville, Becky Keels of Houston, Grant Holt of Navasota and Trish Holt of Plantersville; 8 grandchildren; brothers-in-law, Allan Carmena and wife, Glenna, of Ft. Worth and Roger "Bud" Wallace of Albuquerque, NM, numerous nieces and nephews and a great number of friends.
A gathering of family and friends will be held Tuesday, October 15, 2013, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Lindley-Robertson-Holt Funeral Home. Funeral services have been set for 10:30 am Wednesday, October 16, 2013, at First Baptist Church of Navasota, 309 Church Street. A luncheon will be held in the family life center immediately following the services. Graveside services and interment will be 3:00 pm Wednesday in Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery in Houston.
