Ronnie Romike Obituary
Ronnie (Ron) Wayne Romike passed away on November 5, in Houston, TX at age 69 after a long and courageous battle with Multiple Myeloma.
Ron was born on the 22nd of July 1944, to Gus and Fayola Romike. He was born and raised in Sinton, TX and was a 1962 graduate of Sinton High School. Ron excelled as an athlete earning varsity letters is 4 sports (football, basketball, track & golf), including All-State honors in football both his junior and senior years. He was also an officer in the FFA, a Lone Star Farmer and raised the Reserve Champion fat hog at the 1962 San Patricia County Fair.
Ron attended the University of North Texas on an athletic scholarship; graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1967. While at UNT he earned three varsity letters, was elected team captain and was a 1965 1st team All Missouri Valley Conference selection. He was also a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.
Following his graduation Ron began his career as a football coach and biology teacher at Odem High School in Odem, Texas. On the 25th of January 1969, Ron married the love of his life Cassandra K. Hedtke of Sinton, Texas. In 1969 Ron answered his call to service by enlisting in the United States Air Force. Ron served as an officer at Malmstrom AFB in Great Falls, Montana from 1969 to 1972.
After his military service, he began his career as a healthcare sales professional in San Antonio, Texas. In 1976 he joined Baxter Healthcare as a sales representative in San Angelo, Texas. In 1982, he was promoted to Regional Sales Manager and returned to San Antonio, where he earned his Master's Degree in Education from the University of Texas at San Antonio (1983). During his 33 years at Baxter, Ron received numerous accolades, including multiple Manager of the Year awards, prior to his retirement in July of 2009.
Ron was very involved in the San Antonio community, serving as a member of the San Antonio Rotary Club, Clark High School Booster Club, North Side Suburban Little League and Fair Oaks Ranch Country Club. He enjoyed coaching his sons' youth sports teams and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Upon his retirement, his greatest joy was spending time with his five grandchildren who knew him as" Potts".
Ron is preceded in death by his parents Gus and Fayola Romike. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Cassandra H. Romike, son Brian Romike and wife Leslie, son Brad Romike and wife Alison, and his 5 grandchildren Will, Gus, Reid, Georgia & Lilah. Ron is also survived by his brother Robert Romike and wife Virginia, brother-in-law Ron Hedtke and wife Rita, father-in-law Royce Hedtke; as well as numerous friends and colleagues.
A memorial service is to be conducted at 2:00 PM on Wednesday November 13, 2013; at Alamo Heights United Methodist Church, 825 E. Basse Road in San Antonio, TX. In lieu of customary remembrances, contributions may be directed to MD Anderson Cancer Center.
