(Rudy) In the early hours of April 19, 2014, long time Houston resident, Rudolph R. Avila (Rudy) passed away in his sleep at 85.
Rudy was born in 1928 to Carlos and Josephine Avila of Spain and Trinidad respectively. He spent his early years in Long Island, New York and joined the Coast Guard at the age of 18. The Coast Guard sent him to Hawaii where he met his wife of 62 years, Mary Ellen Gerdes (M.E.), a native of Kauai. Rudy continued to serve in the Coast Guard as a reservist, until he retired as a Lt. Commander.
He graduated from the University of Southern California (USC) with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and joined Shell Oil Company directly after graduation. He retired from Shell after 30 years to teach High School science and math.
Rudy was President of Water District 52 for over 10 years, an active member of John Wesley United Methodist Church and Champions Golf Club. He is survived by his wife M.E., daughter Cathleen and sister Carla of Linwood, New Jersey.
A Memorial Service will be held at John Wesley United Methodist Church
5830 Bermuda Dunes Dr, Houston, TX 77069 at 2:30 p.m. on April 25th. His life will be celebrated at Campioni's Restaurant, 13850 Cutten Rd, Houston, TX 77069.
