Tom Foster was born at home in Denton, Texas on May 10, 1923. His family moved to Houston, Texas at an early age where his father, Thomas, Sr. ran and operated Foster's Nursery. He graduated from San Jacinto High School and then went on to graduate from Texas A&M University in 1948 with a degree in Landscape Architecture. He worked alongside his father in the landscaping business. His mother, Lela W. Foster, was a florist.
After a term of service in the Air Force, he met and married his school sweetheart, Sadie B. McGinty, in 1949 and settled in Houston. They had three girls, Patricia Foster Saulsbury, Peggy Claire Foster and Nancy Lela Foster.
He attended law school at the University of Houston and passed the State Bar of Texas in 1966. He went on to specialize in Family Practice Law. He received many commendations and was well known in Houston for his expertise in the courtroom.
He was fortunate to find love the second time around and married Joan W. Lander in 1983. They spent many years traveling abroad with the Traveling Aggies. Tom and Joan were well known in their neighborhood of Boulevard Oaks for their vegetable garden and Boston Terriers. Joan preceded him in death in 2004.
He is survived by his daughters, Patricia and Peggy, his grandson, Eric Alden Saulsbury and son-in-law, Grantland Saulsbury. His youngest daughter, Nancy, preceded him in death in 2012.
