Thoymmee Dell |
Sadberry Phillips, the 5th child of Heslip and Lillie Sadberry, was born on January 31, 1927 in Benchley, Texas.
Thoymmee Phillips' education was received at the Dorsey Loughridge School in Benchley, Texas; Blackshear High School in Hearne, Texas. She earned her Bachelors and Masters Degrees from Prairie View A&M University. Thoymmee believed education was paramount for success in life, and continued her education at Texas A&M University, S.W. Texas State, and the University of Texas in Austin. She also taught for 10 years in the Smithville School system. Prior to that, she was a Western Union Switchboard Operator at Prairie View A&M University.
Thoymmee Phillips was very active in the Prairie View community and the local Catholic Parish. She was a member of the Prairie View Chamber of Commerce (charter member), the PVAMU Alumni Association (Life Member), the PVAMU Athletic and Band Booster Club, the Catholic Daughters of America, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. (Life Member), the Texas Retired Teachers Association, and a member of St. Vincent de Paul Society. During her active life she was honored by various organizations including Who's Who In American Education, as Catholic Daughter of the Year, and as an Outstanding PVAMU Alumnus.
Thoymmee loved being active in her community, parish and with her university; however, her greatest love was for her family and friends. She met and married Professor Joseph R. Phillips at Prairie View A&M University and it was there they raised their two daughters, Jacqueline and Secceter. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Joseph, and sisters, Mabel, Majorie, Alpearl, and Eunell. She leaves to cherish her memory, a sister Carolyn Joyce Brown (Charles), a brother Heslip Sadberry, daughters Jacqueline Phillips-Haynes and Secceter Jones, granddaughters, Tameisha Haynes, Shawntrese Haynes Russell (Jeremias), and Sharhonda Jones, and great-granddaughters Kameron and Kamille as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and the many "adopted" sons and daughters of her Prairie View family. Her bright smile and positive attitude will be missed by all who knew her. She would always say, "We sure enjoyed you" and that she did.
In her memory, and in lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make donations to the Joseph R. Phillips and Thoymmee Dell Sadberry Scholarship Fund (P O Box 896, Prairie View, Texas 77446) for Engineering and Education students at Prairie View A&M University.
