VanHetherly Obituary
Van Marion Hetherly died on April 4, 2014 at the age of 84, after a brief illness. Born in Menard, Texas, Van grew up in Lampasas, and graduated from Texas A & M University. He worked as a writer and editor for the Houston Chronicle for more than 30 years, finishing as editor of the Texas Magazine. He also served in the Army in Germany during the Korean War.
Van was a talented and creative man. He could write a great story, and would draw and paint pictures that were uniquely his, nothing you had ever seen before. He was a six-foot tall former football player who was comfortable in yellow shorts and pink shirts. He loved football, and
nothing more than watching his beloved Aggies, even though they often disappointed him. He was an individual, a generous man who accepted people for who they are. Over the years, his home was a refuge for friends and family, a safe place to be.
Van is survived by his two daughters, Pamela Hetherly of Mount Vernon, Maine, and Kay Hetherly of San Marcos, Texas. He is predeceased by his beloved son Tucker. Honoring Van's spirit, there will be no service.
Thanks to Central Texas Medical Center Hospice Care and Hays Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in San Marcos, Texas, for care provided at the end of his life. Any donations can be made in his name to CTMC Hospice.
