Verna Holden Mair, 90, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away on April 20, 2013. Born August 9, 1922 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Vernon Jay Holden and Marion Holden, Verna received her undergraduate degree in English from UCLA in 1944 and her Masters in Library Science from The University of Texas at Austin in 1969. She is preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Munro Mair in 1966, and is survived by her loving family: sons, Alex Mair and wife, Donna; Vernon Mair and wife, Teresa, daughter Mary Pless; grandchildren, Allison Mair Vaughan and husband, Wayne, Kyle Mair, Cory Pless, Nathan Pless and wife, Kristin, Tyler Mair and wife, Emma, Melissa Mair, Michelle Mair and great-granddaughter, Mackenzie Vaughan. Verna worked for the Aldine Independent School District as Library Coordinator, retiring in 1986. She will be remembered for her love of reading, learning, volunteerism and concern for the underprivileged. She provided for and nurtured her family in a Christian home and taught Sunday School and worked with youth for many years at Woodland Christian Church and Good Shepherd Christian Church. The family would like to express their gratitude to her caregivers: Valerie, Vivian, Mary Beth, Trent and Pastor Steve for the genuine love, concern and excellent care provided to her and her family. A memorial service will be held in the Family Chapel at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home, 6900 Lawndale, Houston, TX 77023 on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at 2:00 p.m., officiated by Reverends Norman and Marilyn Fiedmont and Reverend Sam Alaniz. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Heifer International or Good Shepherd Christian Church (memo to Verna Mair Ministry fund) which is used to sponsor world outreach projects that were so dear to her heart.
