A lifelong resident of Houston, Vernon graduated from Lamar High School and from North Texas State University. Vernon served in U.S. Army Intelligence, including two years in Vietnam, and had a 25-year career with the Veteran's Administration in Houston.
Vernon's gentle humor will be sadly missed by good friends Loretta and Kenneth Krasoff, Jennifer (Jenni) Nigro, Karen Smith, Linda Suib and Page Williams. Vernon supported animal welfare causes and had arranged for his devoted terrier Reggie to spend his final days at the Stevenson Companion Animal Life-Care Center at the Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine in College Station.
During Vernon's final years of illness, Jenni Nigro's faithful care of both Vernon and Reggie enabled Vernon to remain at home with Reggie until the end was near. His cousin Beth Paul was a wonderful guardian at the end, and care was provided by the Village of Meyerland memory care unit and the Memorial Hermann Southwest hospice section.
Arrangements are through Aldine Funeral Home. As requested by him, Vernon's remains will be cremated and interred at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery with a private service. Memorial donations may be made to Stevenson Companion Animal Life-Care Center, Texas Veterinary Medical Center, 4461 TAMU; College Station TX 77843-4461, or the
