Barrientes, Houston TX; unexpectedly passed away on December 4, 2013. Vira was born to her parents Pedro and Rosa Valdez, on October 20, 1935, in San Antonio TX. She was the youngest of ten siblings and her nickname to her brothers and sisters was "Machi". At the age of six, Vira lost her mother to tuberculosis and was raised by her older sister, Lillie Valdez. Lillie lived with Vira until Lillie's death last year.
At the age of 18, Vira married her late husband, John. They were married for fifty-three years. She worked in the accounting department for Olshan Lumber Company, Gulf-n-Basco Plumbing and Hughes Tools. However, her most satisfying position was being the "book keeper" for Lantrip Elementary.
In the late nineteen fifties and early sixties, Vira and John became members of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. In the seventies, they became members' of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and Vira was a faithful worshiper.
She was a loving, caring and generous sister, wife, and most of all, mother and grandmother. She is survived by; her brother, Rudy Valdez, son's Chris Barrientes (wife Yolanda, grandson's Brandon and Joshua) and Robert Barrientes, numerous nephews, nieces, and other relatives. She loved her family dearly and her daughter-in-law, Yolanda, was the daughter she never had.
She was a seven-year survivor of stage III breast cancer. She enjoyed baking, camping in Kerrville, TX, and going to "Fiesta" in San Antonio. Vira lived an active life and had just returned from a three-day trip to the Basilica of Our Lady in San Juan, TX; when she unexpectedly passed.
She always said her daily prayers and loved and believed in the Lord God. She was heaven sent to us. She will be forever missed. A special thanks to Diana Mendoza and Henrietta Lazo for their support and to her friend Dora Gallardo for her McDonald's coffee after church.
