died Monday, December 17, 2012 in Houston at 89 years of age. He was born March 8, 1923 on his family's farm in Pontotoc County, Mississippi, to parents Nona Mae and Marion King Betts. After moving with his family to Weslaco, Texas in 1926, he played coronet in the high school band where he won many UIL awards. He began his studies at the University of Texas in 1941. Doyle was drafted into the Army and served in the 11th Cavalry Group, 36th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron Mechanized during World War Two. He was wounded April 8th, 1945 near Hanover, Germany and received the Purple Heart. He returned to the University of Texas after the war and was awarded a B.B.A. in 1949. Doyle also met his wife that year and married Johanna DeLancey in 1951. He was employed by Honeywell from 1955 to 1988, and during retirement, moved with his wife to Georgetown, Texas. He is preceded in death by his wife, his mother and father, and his sister Eva Mae Hamilton. Doyle is survived by his sons Mark Betts, Kenneth Betts, and Blake Betts, his daughters-in-law Kathy Betts and Frances Betts, his granddaughters Sarah Betts and Mary Betts Peña, his sister Frances Fowler, and his brother M.K. Betts, Jr.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 12th at 2:00 PM, Westbury Baptist Church, 10425 Hillcroft St. Houston. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Westbury Baptist Church (wbchouston.org), or the Parkinson's Disease Foundation (pdf.org).
