Wilton Milstead Obituary
Wilton" Bill" Hewes Milstead, 86 died April 6, 2014. He was born July 31, 1927 to Calista Edna Galloway Milstead and Dr. DeWilton Hewes Milstead , D.D.S in East Saint Louis, Illinois. Growing up in Belleville, Illinois, his family moved to Winchester, Illinois in 1940. While in high school, he worked part time for the Illinois Highway Department. Upon graduation from Winchester High School in 1945, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17. He served as a Machinist's Mate 3rd Class Petty Officer in the Naval Construction Battalion better known as Seabees in the South Pacific on LST 219 and Attack Transport APA -222. Following completion of his enlistment in 1946, he attended the University of Illinois and the University of Houston. From his father, he demonstrated an interest in photography which became his lifelong profession. Introduced by a fellow classmate at the University of Houston, he subsequently married Clemmie Mozelle Massey on August 13, 1950 at the First Christian Church of Houston. Recalled from the U.S.N.R. in 1950, he served at Port Hueneme, California to 1952 and remained in the U.S.N.R. until 1954 with 9 years of service. He was most proud of his service to his country. This belief was instilled in him by his father who served in the American Expeditionary Force in WW I. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, he worked for Jack Stiles Photography until he founded his own firm Milstead Photography in 1959, specializing in commercial photography. He was a member of the Professional Photographers Guild of Houston and an Accredited Master Photographer by the Professional Photographers Association. He retired in 2011. In retirement, he divided his time between his family's homes in Houston and Wimberley.
Bill is survived by his 4 children, son Thomas Hewes Milstead and wife Melissa, daughter Jan Carol Milstead Moss and husband Gary, daughter Laurie Ann Milstead Allen and husband Phillip, and daughter Kay Lee Milstead McKinney and husband Terry, his 8 grandchildren, Heather Moss Burrer and husband Scott, Charles Skyler Moss and wife Nicole, Kacie Allen Lambeth and husband Kent, Richard Cordell Allen, Brooks Nolan McKinney, Will Brendan McKinney, Blythe Blackwell Milstead and John Hewes Milstead, and his 1 great grandchild Foster Burrer. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Bill was predeceased by his wife Clemmie Mozelle Milstead, his parents Calista Edna Galloway Milstead and Dr. DeWilton Hewes Milstead, D.D.S., sisters Jean Louise Milstead Campbell and Helen Martina Milstead.
A memorial service is to be held at 7:00 PM, April 11,2014 at the South Park Funeral Home, Pearland, TX with visitation beginning at 6:00 PM. A military graveside service will be conducted at Jacob's Well Cemetery, CR 220, Wimberley,TX at 2:00 PM, April 12, 2014.
Serving as pallbearers are Thomas Hewes Milstead, Gary Moss, Phillip Allen, Terry McKinney, Skyler Moss, Richard Cordell Allen, Brooks Nolan McKinney, Will Brendan McKinney, John Hewes Milstead, Scott Burrer, Kent Lambeth, Blythe Blackwell Milstead, Nicole Moss, Kacie Allen Lambeth, and Heather Burrer.
