ERNEST FRED STRAHM
Dec. 28, 1927 - Mar. 18, 2013
Longtime valley farmer, Ernie Strahm went to be with his Lord on March 18 at the age of 85.
Ernie was born to Swiss immigrants Fred and Bertha Strahm in Holtville, CA. He resided in Holtville his entire life. When Ernie was just 10 years old he climbed on a Ford tractor for the first time. His father allowed him to cut the alfalfa that would be used to feed the cows at their dairy. From that moment on he had a love for farming and tractors that remained with him his entire life.
On April 29th, 1950 Ernie married his beloved wife of almost 63 years, Esther Watts, also of Holtville. They have four children. Ernie, his brother Walter and their father farmed together until Fred Strahm's passing. Ernie and Walter continued farming with Strahm and Sons until 1981. At that time they each formed their own companies where they each farmed with their sons. Ernie and his three sons formed Ernie Strahm and Sons, where he remained active until recent years.
Ernie was active in his community having been a life long member of the Swiss Club of Imperial Valley and of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. He was also active in the Holtville Rotary Club and was a founding member of the Holtville Athletic Club. He had a love for antique tractors and over the years his tractors could be seen on display at the Midwinter Fair or driving down the street at the Holtville Carrot Parade. He was proud to see his grandchildren driving them!
Ernie is survived by his beloved wife Esther; his four children, Clifford (Frances), Michael (Margaret), Rodney (Maureen) and Greta (George Stergios); 13 grandchildren Brian, Melissa, Megan, Vincent, Gregory, Katie, Christopher, Keriann, Aimee, Shelli, Christopher, Kalli and Lorna, along with spouses, and 26 great- grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother and sisters, Ruth Fudge, Walter Strahm and Maryann Kemp and their families.
Ernie was preceded in death by his beloved grandson, Aaron Strahm and his parents.
Ernie was lovingly called Chiefy by his grandchildren and his great grandchildren. He will be deeply missed but we are blessed with precious memories!
