Fernando Nunez, 89, of Holtville passed away on Sunday, October 20, 2013 at El Centro Regional Hospital due to a heart attack.
Fernando was born on January 30, 1924 in Holtville, CA. He married Ramona Nunez on January 9, 1951 in Mexicali, Baja California. He then moved and lived in various locations throughout Baja California, which included Guadalajara, Mexico, Carboca, Sonora Valle de Trinidad and Valle de Mexicali. While living in Mexico he had many occupations working as a diesel mechanic, a teacher, welder, and a police officer. In 1972 he returned to Holtville where he worked for Nimura Brothers, Borchard Farms, Sacroni Farms, and Ochoa Packing. He retired at the age of 67 and began volunteering for the Head Start Migrant Programs. He enjoyed spending days with his family and close friends as well as his 21 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his son, Manuel Nunez.
He is survived by his children, Guadalupe Romero, Maria Elena Vargas, Martha Nunez, Javier Nunez, Fernando Nunez, Patricia Rojas and Mayte Nunez.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 23, 2013 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Hems Brothers Mortuary in El Centro. Service will be held on Thursday, October 24, 2013 at 10 a.m. officiated by Father George at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Holtville, CA. Burial will immediately follow at Holtville Terrace Cemetery.
He was a very loving, simple, and kind hearted man. He will be best remembered as "viejito bailador"
