Obituary Condolences

July 17, 1921 - Apr. 1, 2014

Henry LeRoy "Roy" Rood, 92, passed away on April 1, 2014 after briefly being hospitalized with pneumonia. His son, Michael, was at his side when he went to join his beloved wife, Barbara, in heaven.
Roy lived in rural Calexico for 87 years. He was born in Coos Bay, Oregon on July 17, 1921, the son of late Vernon and Cora Gates Rood. He was one of four boys. Roy lived for the first five years of his life on a dairy farm on the Coos River. His family moved to the Imperial Valley in about 1926 to join his mother's father who had moved here from Canada to farm. Roy's parents built and ran a dairy and farm east of Calexico where Roy and his brothers grew up milking cows and working on the farm. Roy attended Jasper Elementary School and Calexico High School. During high school, he met the love of his life, Barbara Maddox. They were married on April 4, 1943 in Yuma, Arizona. Roy served in the Army Air Force from 1942 to 1946. During that time, he attended officer's training school and became a Navigator/Bombardier and achieved the rank of Lieutenant.
Roy was a devoted husband and loving father of two children, Rebecca and Michael. While raising their children, Roy and Barbara ran a family farm east of Calexico for over twenty years. After the children were grown and in college, he became the manager of Northrup King Seed Company in Imperial, CA and upon retiring sold real estate for several years.
For many years, Roy enjoyed hiking, camping, and backpacking in the desert, mountains, and Baja with his son, Mike. He rode motorcycles and "quads" on just about every trail in the Imperial Valley - well into his eighties! Mike taught his dad to fly his "ultra light" aircraft, and Roy flew many hours from their home near Calexico. Roy and Barbara also enjoyed family motor home trips in the desert with Rebecca and Mike and their families. There were many good times sitting around the campfire and under the stars. All of these memories and more will be cherished by his family.
Roy was an active member of the community. He was a Little League coach, he served on the Jasper Elementary School Board, he was a volunteer docent for ten years at the Pioneer Museum, he was a member of the Calexico Elk's Club, the Calexico Masonic Lodge, and the Calexico Rotary Club. He served as president of the Rotary Club, and he helped organize the club's Annual Crab Crack Fundraiser Dinner for many years.
Roy was preceded in death by Barbara, his beloved wife of seventy years; and brothers, Howard, Robert, and Vernon. He is survived by daughter Rebecca Beaver and her husband Edward of Escondido, CA; son Michael Rood and his wife Nancy of rural Calexico, CA.; and grandson John Beaver and his wife Kristine of Seattle, WA.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hems Brothers Mortuary in El Centro. A graveside memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 24, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Mt. View Cemetery located at 895 Scaroni Rd., Calexico with Rev. Dr. Ron Griffen officiating. A luncheon will follow at the Rood family home of 65 years in rural Calexico. Please come and help celebrate the life of Roy Rood and family.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Roy's name may be made to the Calexico Rotary Club or the Imperial Valley Pioneer Museum.
Roy touched many lives as a wonderful son, husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, community member, and friend. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who were blessed to be a part of his life.
