He was the only child of Verbena and John H. Bowyer. He grew up hunting and riding motorcycles. John enlisted in the United Stated Air Force on January 30, 1955. Later that same year, October 18, 1955, he married his high school sweetheart, Mollie Bourne of Virginia. They had two children together; Debra and John. He spent the next 20 years in the Air Force serving his country. During his career he was stationed many places and served several tours overseas; including Vietnam as a part of the 98th Fighter Interceptor Squadron. John was transferred to the Naval Air Facility, El Centro in 1966 and he moved his family to El Centro with him. This is where he finished his career. After retiring from the Air Force, John started a security guard business (DeAnza Security Service). He also opened up Bowyer & Avrit Gun Shop in El Centro in 1984 with his daughter, Debra. He later sold the security business and continued with the Gun Shop.
John loved motorcycles and riding, he was a long time member of ABATE (American Bikers Aimed Towards Education), and AMA (American Motorcyclists Association). He spent much of his spare time cleaning his motorcycle and going on motorcycle runs to support various charities in the Imperial Valley.
