Sheldon Clark Chaffer went to be with the Lord on December 12, 2013 in 29 Palms, California.
Sheldon Clark Chaffer was born on May 25, 1945 and raised in Calipatria, California. He was the third child of Johanna and Wayne Chaffer. His father was the town's Dentist and his mom was a homemaker. Both his mom and dad were active in the community and instilled giving back to their community in all their children. His first occupations included pitching watermelons, dishwasher in a local restaurant, service station attendant, flagman for a crop duster, journeyman draftsman, policeman, even a repo-man. He eventually landed in the insurance industry becoming an agent first for Allstate, then FARMERS in Brawley, CA. He left the agency to work as an employee for FARMERS Insurance in Santa Ana. He moved quickly up the ladder to Sales Manager, moving from Santa Ana, to Austin, Texas, to Aurora, Illnois, then back to Los Angeles. In 1993, he left as an employee of FARMERS to become a District Manager for FARMERS in Burbank, CA. In 1999, he transferred as a District Manager to the Palm Springs, CA area, and moved to Joshua Tree in 2005. In 2008 Sheldon decided to retire as a District Manager, and went to work in his wife Maggie's FARMERS Insurance Agency in Twentynine Palms.
Sheldon was very active in the community. His work in included President of Joshua Tree Boys and Girls Club, President of Rotary Clubs - Palm Springs and Twentynine Palms, President of the Men's Golf Club, Board Member of the Hi-Desert Hospital Foundation, Finance Chair for Blessed Sacrament, and Joshua Tree National Park Association.
Sheldon is survived by his wife Maggie Chaffer; former wife, Patricia Chaffer; and their children, Sheldon Chaffer II, Lucinda (Chaffer) Johnson, Sterling Chaffer; daughter-in-laws, Janie Hebert and Kelly Chaffer; son-in-law, Ivar Johnson; grandchildren, Eileen Chaffer, Johanna Chaffer, Adele Chaffer, Sadey Johnson, Dresdyn Johnson, William Johnson, Ellie Chaffer and Reiley Chaffer; sister, Patricia Russell; sister-in-laws Linda Walters, Christine Venter, Rosanne Borghese, Terry Fanning, Debbi Zabiegalski, and Kathy Gallarza; brother-in-laws, Carl Russell, Art Fanning, Michael Borghese, and Wally Venter.
Sheldon will long be remembered for his infectious smile, his story telling abilities, his positive can-do attitude, his helpful caring nature, his blue eyes, and his ability to brighten up any room. He will be sorely missed.
Internment and "Celebration of Life" to be announced and will take place in Brawley, California.
