IlaRue Stanford
March 13, 1924 - August 9, 2013
IlaRue Stanford joined hands in Heaven with her husband, Wayne, and son Steve, Friday August 9, 2013. IlaRue was born in Wolford, ND March 13, 1924 and moved to Idaho with her newly wed husband in 1947. She has spent the last couple of years in SC with her daughter Candy and son-in-law Mark Perry.
Prior to her marriage, IlaRue taught school in Garrison, ND before she and her older sister Maxine decided to move to Portland, OR to work in the Kaiser Shipyards building aircraft carriers. The crew would build a baby aircraft carrier in two weeks! IlaRue's job was to help wire the ship to avoid enemy radar detection.
Following a vacation to San Francisco to meet her brother who had "R&R" while in the Navy, she also met her future husband, Wayne Stanford. Following a three-year courtship, the two shared a double wedding with IlaRue's sister Maxine in June 1947.
After moving to Idaho, IlaRue began her illustrious teaching career at Lakeside Elementary. Following completion of the "new" Lincoln Elementary on Canyon Street, she taught third grade for the next 30 years in that location. IlaRue's teaching career resumed, after she retired in 1983, when she was recruited to teach at Zion Lutheran Church School.
Some of IlaRue's professional accolades included being named Nampa's Teacher of the Year, as well as being the first teacher certified locally, to teach New Math utilizing Cuisenaire Rods. Two former students became published authors and dedicated their book 'Forwards' to IlaRue Stanford for her "…incredible ability to motivate and inspire excellence…." She was also a member of Alpha Delta Kappa (ADK) - an international honorary organization for women educators.
In addition to teaching full time, IlaRue also raised two children: daughter Candy, who resides in SC with her husband, and son Steve, whose widow Diana lives in Oregon.
After retiring, IlaRue and her late husband Wayne enjoyed traveling - first to model airplane 'fly-ins' where Wayne would participate in flying several of his own radio-controlled, glider or electric airplanes. IlaRue, along with other "airplane wives", helped support the modelers' association by selling hats, shirts and other related-memorabilia.
However, after the grandchildren began to arrive, Wayne and IlaRue were regularly packing their suitcases to travel to Oregon to visit son Steve's family, or to Colorado, the East Coast, or to England, to visit daughter Candy's family. But sightseeing trips were special as well, including a 9,000-mile road trip to Alaska. The couple managed to visit all 50 states, many Canadian provinces, as well as several European countries. The anticipation of a trip made both IlaRue and Wayne 'giddy' with anticipation!
IlaRue was a long time member of Zion Lutheran Church and considered Nampa her home after her 1947 marriage and move to Idaho from North Dakota. Following Wayne's passing in 2010, IlaRue began spending winters in SC with Candy and summers in Idaho. However, over the past 18 months, her health rapidly declined with the onslaught of gastrointestinal cancer and related treatments. IlaRue quietly passed away in Myrtle Beach, SC Friday August 9, 2013.
IlaRue is survived by daughter Candy Perry and son-in-law Mark, late son Steve's widow Diana Stanford; grandchildren Stephanie, Erin, Sally, Steven, Molly, Ben and Adam; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters Maxine and Geraldine; brother Allan and sisters-in-law LeIla, Grace and Louise, brother-in-law Jerry.
