Daniel C. Hurley, 89, of Pocatello, Idaho, passed away quietly and peacefully of causes natural to age on Monday, February 4th, 2013 at a local assisted living. He was born in Seattle, Washington on February 8, 1923, the son of the late James F. and Ruth A. (Preston) Hurley.
In 1935, Daniel's family moved from Seattle to Pocatello. He attended St. Joseph's School, Bonneville and graduated from Pocatello High School in 1941. He met and fell in love with Ruth Loretta Stratten. Daniel enlisted in the US Navy and served during World War II- as a SM2C, participating in the Normandy and Southern France invasions. He received the European-African ME Area Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal He was honorably discharged from the military on Feb. 22, 1946. On April 23, 1946, Daniel married his high school sweetheart, Ruth, at St. Anthony's Church in Pocatello. He worked for Kraft Foods Co and then as a fireman for Pocatello for 28 years. He retired as a Fire Inspector. He was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Community, St. Joseph's Chapel and was member of Knights of Columbus 3'. He enjoyed camping, building and remodeling, taking vacations with family and traveling to British Columbia and taking tours in Canada
Daniel was preceded in death by his loving wife, Ruth on Tuesday, March 20, 2007; and four sisters, Aileen, Mary Clair Lee, Margaret Krueger and Anita Eisenhower. He is survived by children, Ruth (Dean) Eggleston of Buhl, Nancy (Bill) Davis of Pocatello, Mary (Bob) Anderson of Chubbuck, Bernadette (Gary) Opsal of Longview, Washington, Teresa (Lester) Mezo of Lynden, Washington; sons, Dan (Molly) Hurley of Coeur d' Alene, Idaho, John (Patty) Hurley of Castleford, Idaho, Mark (Becky) Hurley of Pocatello and Chris (Edith) Hurley of Buhl; 30 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Joan Hurley of Reno, Nevada Daniel loved spending time with his family and extended family. He was truly loved by all and will be greatly missed.
The recitation of the Holy Rosary and viewing will be held 6:30 P.M. on Thursday, Feb. 7th at Downard Funeral Home, 241 North Garfield, Pocatello, (208)233-0686. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Spirit Catholic Community, St. Joseph's Chapel, Pocatello, Idaho 11:00 A.M. on Friday, Feb. 8th. Interment will be at Mountain View Cemetery, Section 44 West, in Pocatello with Military Rites to be offered by the Pocatello Veterans Honor Guard.
