Soda Springs- David Edgar Mason, 89, of Soda Springs, Idaho passed away at his home surrounded by loved ones on May 15, 2014. Dave was born on April 10, 1925 in Missoula, Montana to Fredrick Ramsey and Dorothy J. Mason.
He lived in Missoula, Montana and later moved to Ogden, Utah where he graduated from Ogden High School in 1943. He then served in the US Navy C Bees, during WWII. Upon his return from service he attended Weber State College. He then served during the Korean war. He was proud to serve his country and so began his passion and patriotism. He served in the Philippines, Guam, New Guinea.
Dave married Lois McBride in 1947. They had one child Ora Lee. They were later divorced. He married Donna June Gilbert in 1950. They had three children Dan, Donita, and Dale.
They lived in Ogden, Utah until 1970 working for Utah Bottling Works and Wasatch Distributing, when they moved to Soda Springs to establish Mason Distributing Company. Dave's dedication to his community has been evident throughout his life. Dave founded the Soda Springs Winter Carnival in 1991, which initially raised funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, later the funding supported local entities. He was the driving force behind establishing the Caribou County Veterans Memorial (Dave's Dream). His patriotism and leadership is evident in the community of Soda Springs and surrounding areas.
Dave was a member of the VFW, the American Legion, the Elks Club, and Kiwanis.
He is survived by two sons Dan G. Mason and Dale and Susan Mason, and two daughters Ora Lee Keaton and Donita Mason, and one brother William H. Mason.
He was preceded in death by one brother John Mason, and one sister Margaret Clough. Dave had 4 grandchildren, Shanon Larson Jimenez, Shawn Larson, Erica Mason, and Autumn Mason and 8 great grandchildren.
Services will be held on Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at Noon at the Hooper LDS Chapel in Soda Springs. The family will visit with friends on Monday evening from 7-8 p.m. at the Sims Funeral Home and on Tuesday morning from 10:30-11:45 a.m. at the Church prior to services. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery with Military Honors.
