Joseph Henry Barrett
Roy - Our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, May 12, 2014.
Dad was born December 22, 1920 to Henry Simon and Sadie Leora Tolman Barrett in Pocatello, Idaho. Dad was the oldest of three children. He was raised in Pocatello, Idaho and graduated from Pocatello High School. Upon graduation, he went to Idaho State Technical College and then enlisted in the Army Air Corp. He served in World War II as an airplane mechanic in the Pacific. While on leave in Pocatello, he met the love of his life, Shirley Hallbert. They were wed on August 4, 1945 in Pocatello, ID, and later had their marriage solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on January 27, 1950.
Following the war, dad bought and ran a small airport in American Falls, Idaho. Realizing this wasn't the life for him, they moved to Layton, UT, where he worked at Hill Field. They eventually settled in Roy. Joe's work eventually transitioned into the Minute Man missile program. After a medical discharge he returned to college and earned his bachelor's degree from Weber State College and a master degree from Utah State University. He worked at Weber State for the Small Business Development Center and taught small business classes. Joe enjoyed working with the entrepreneurs of Weber, Davis and Box Elder Counties. He retired from the Small Business Administration at the age of 74. He enjoyed working on his computer and writing his life history. He also enjoyed BYU football, basketball and volleyball.
During his life, dad spent numerous hours in service for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, serving in several bishoprics and high priest groups. One of his passions was genealogy. Joe and Shirley spent time as service missionaries at the Ogden Genealogy Library.
Joe was preceded in death by his loving wife Shirley, parents Henry Barrett and Leora Porter, brother William, daughter Diana Patane, granddaughters Erin Bott, Shannon Bott and Jody Slater and son-in-law, Jim Slater.
Joe is survived by his children Joseph (Valerie) Barrett, Jr., Kaysville; Marilyn Jordan, Roy; Janet (Mitchell) Cameron, Draper; David (Rhonda) Barrett, Highland; Chris (Alesha) Barrett, Layton: 29 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Ilene Middleton.
