Chandler Abraham Coury Obituary
Chandler Abraham Coury
1916 - 2014
Chandler Abraham Coury, 98, passed away on Saturday, June 28th at Touchmark Meadow Lake Village Retirement Community in Meridian, Idaho, where he resided for the past several years with June "Skip" Coury, his wife of 71 years.
The oldest of three, his sisters, Nadia Wenger of California, and Jenesta Ferguson of Washington preceded Chandler's passing. He was born in 1916 in Somerville, Mass. to Charles and Irene Elizabeth. The family moved to California and eventually settled in San Francisco, where as a teenager, he discovered his love of theater. In his junior year at Commerce High School Chandler won the coveted lead role in the senior play... this piqued his interest and as a young man, he performed in several local community theaters, eventually leading him to front a 14-piece dance band at various venues throughout the Bay Area… it was at one of these dances that he met Skip, the love of his life.
Chandler joined the Navy during WWII and due to health issues, was assigned to the Dental Corp at Great Lakes, Illinois. Upon his discharge from the service, he and Skip moved back to the Bay Area where he eventually found his niche in what was to become the beginning of contemporary credit. Chandler brought his experience, knowledge and sheer exuberance to the growth and expansion of the Payment Services Industry. From his early days as a leading pioneer, he opened the first Diner's Club office in San Francisco and sold the very first credit card accounts in the United States and Canada... eventually retiring in his early 80's from numerous senior management positions with Equifax Inc.
Chandler leaves behind his wife, his son, Chandler Coury of Stevenson Ranch, CA and daughter and son-in-law, Nadia and Chuck Pippus of Jordan Valley, Oregon and Meridian, Idaho, extended family and many, many dear friends.… he loved people, and his zest for life was infectious… no one was a stranger… we'll miss you Chandler, Mizpah.
The family would like to thank the staff at The Meadows Ass't Living at Touchmark and Align Hospice for their exceptional care of Chandler. Memorial services will be held at Touchmark in the Grand Lodge at 4pm on August 6th.
Memories and condolences may be shared with Chandler's family on his webpage at www.summersfuneral.com.
