Delmar John Hallett
1921 ~ 2013
Delmar John Hallett, 92, of Rupert, Idaho and formerly of Boise, passed away October 23, 2013.
He was born July 19th, 1921 in Council, Idaho. He was the 7th child of 9 children. He married Dorothy Shaw in 1947 and they raised 3 sons.
He was Valedictorian for his class at Council High School. He attended college in La Grande, OR.
After high school he operated the family farm and then joined the Air force and served as a B-17 bomber pilot for our country in WWII. He was a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the US Air Force. On one mission, he was flying he had to refuel in France. While fueling, he was asked if he would smuggle three US news journalists back across the border and into England, one of the reporters being Andy Rooney. Fortunately the English and American authorities overlooked the need for official entry papers. He flew his B-17 on over 30 missions, and buzzed the Eiffel Tower with his bomber. He assured his crew that if he got caught in this unauthorized maneuver, the worst outcome would be to be grounded and no longer shot at by the Germans. He was able to continue to fly as a private pilot after his USAF service ended.
He was a civil defense volunteer, and a member of the local Elks chapter, a Kiwanas member, and active in American Legion. He also served on the School Board in Council, Idaho.
He attended the Whitney Methodist, the Boise Unity Church, and the Rupert United Methodist Church in Rupert, Idaho.
Delmar loved to Golf. After a stroke disabled one arm, he shot a hole in one using only his good arm. He enjoyed fishing and gardening and was a voracious reader. He liked watching football.
He is survived by 1 sister, Shirley Wing, and a sister-in-law, June Wirthlin. Also, two sons, Nick (Marcia) and Darrell (Nina) Hallett. Two grandchildren, Jae (Patty) Hallett, Laurie Keller. four great-grand children, Matthew and Kyle Keller and Dr. Heather Hallett, and Joshua (Jordan) Hallett.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Mary Hallett, his wife Dorothy, a son, Tom Hallett, Brothers- Guy, Hooley, Byron, Charles, and Noel; Sisters- Marie and Olive, and a Granddaughter- Sara Hallett.
The family would like to express their thanks to the staff at Countryside Care Center, Dr. A. Lane Hansen, and Marian Weickum.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made in Delmar's name to the Rupert United Methodist Foundation.
Graveside Services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, October 28, 2013 in the Dry Creek Cemetery in Boise, Idaho, with Military Honors. Services are under the direction of Joel Heward Hansen Mortuary.
