Dolores Lorraine Hanson Stuart
1921 - 2014
Dolores Lorraine Hanson Stuart died in Boise of natural causes May 11, 2014, at the age of 92. She was born in northwestern Minnesota on December 28, 1921 to father Ivar Lund Hanson and mother Hilda Marie Olson, both descended from long family lines in Norway.
Dolores grew up in Gary, Minnesota with sisters Irene and Esther, brothers Sydney and Dennis, and later, loving stepmother Charlotte and new siblings Diane and Michael. Life was simple and happy in a warm and loving home, with snowy, cold winters and many activities in local schools and churches. Dolores, a bright student, graduated as Valedictorian from Gary High School in 1939, and then left home to attend nursing school at the University of Minnesota. She graduated proudly as a Registered Nurse in 1942, and as the pace of World War II increased, joined the U.S. Army Nurse Corps. Assigned to Camp Carson, Colorado, she met Lieutenant T. Ralph Stuart Jr. They married in 1943, and remained together until his death in 1995.
After the war, Dolores raised her growing family in Pueblo and Denver, Colorado, and then moved to Idaho in 1965. She lived in Boise for almost 50 years, and returned to her nursing career. She said recently, "I had a wonderful career as a nurse. After Army service, and when my children were old enough, I worked for years in a Boise nursing home, retiring at the age of 63 to travel with my husband and other family members. We traveled extensively - to England, Scotland, Ireland, Sweden, Denmark, France, Switzerland, Greece, Italy, Egypt, Israel - and several different times, to Norway. I visited the birthplaces of both my parents in Norway." In Idaho, she spent many wonderful summer days in the family cabin on the Salmon River in Stanley.
Dolores was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, many sisters and brothers, and a beloved daughter, Patricia Kay. She is survived by son Tom (Anne) Stuart of Boise and Stanley, daughter Laurie (Lon) McCurdy of Boise, son Doug (Yan) Stuart of Bellevue, WA, and son-in-law Pete Nolan of Pueblo, CO; grandchildren Anna, Claire, Lisa, Meghan, Evan, and Alyson; great granddaughters Annie and Ellie; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members in the Midwest. She often said, "I am a very lucky mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. My family is very dear to me."
Since childhood, she enjoyed a favorite hobby, doll collecting, and attended many special events, conventions, club meetings and parties with her "doll friends." Dolores was active for many years in her Boise church, and has close friends in her Highlands neighborhood, at Willow Park Assisted Living, in the Sons of Norway, and in Minnesota. The family extends special thanks to the Willow Park staff, especially Elizabeth Klemer, for loving care.
Services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 950 W. State St, Boise, Idaho, at 11:00 AM on June 28, 2014. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to the Church.
