Francis Sam Binder
1928 ~ 2013
Sam passed away September 5, 2013. He was born on March 15, 1928 to Otto and Lucille Binder in Scottsburg, New York. He was the youngest of four boys and the last of his family. He was raised on a farm and went to grade school in Scottsburg, New York. He then graduated from high school in Groveland, New York in 1949. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1950 and became a cook. He was stationed at Mountain Home Air Base when it was a M.A.T.T. base.
While stationed in McCall, he met his future wife, Darlene R. Binder, and they were married on March 6, 1953, and celebrated 60 years together.
He loved spending time in the mountains cutting wood with friends in Sater Meadows and deer hunting in the Hazard Lakes area. Many weekends were spent in their camper and boat named "Sandy Sue", camping in the surrounding mountains enjoying the fishing and hunting. He took great pride in how well he could sharpen a chain, which he did for many years for Brown Tie and Lumber at the mill in McCall, and he also sharpened saw chains for Sitpa.
Sam also was a butcher at Shavers, and then worked for the Western Store and with a few old contractors before getting the job at the mill for Brown Tie and Lumber which became Boise Cascade at both the McCall mill and Cascade mill before retiring.
He is survived by his wife, Darlene; three children, Sam R. Binder (wife Anita), Thomas R. Binder (wife Kim), and daughter Sandi S. Kolias. He has four grandchildren, Taya and Tony Binder, Ashley Binder, and Hanna Kolias; and five great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Ellen Binder in New York; several nieces and nephews in New York; as well as their pet schnauzers, Whiskers and Susie. At his request there are no services.
