J. Ross Larson
June 17, 1922 ~ October 14, 2013
J Ross Larson, 91, passed away on October 14, 2013.
Ross was born June 17, 1922 in Caldwell, Idaho to Lars Edward Larson and Clara Elizabeth Jones Larson. At two years of age, his father passed away leaving Clara to raise four small children. Shortly thereafter, Clara married John Ottley, bringing his two sons and another son of their own into the family.
When Ross was eight, he moved to the Ottley Ranch in Elba, living and working with his Aunt and Uncle Maxwell. He attended elementary school in Elba, graduating from Raft River High School in 1940. Upon graduation, he lived and worked with his beloved uncle, Ted Larson. He dearly loved those who raised and nurtured him through his youth.
Ross entered the Navy in 1942, completing Fleet Torpedo School and Advanced Torpedo School for Enlisted Men in 1943 and ranking as Torpedoman's Mate Second Class. He served his country during World War II as a Forward Torpedoman on the USS Flying Fish Submarine SS-229-B until his honorable discharge on December 30, 1945.
After his discharge from the service, Ross moved to Burley where he found his eternal dance partner, Ora Maxine Winward. On April 19, 1949 they were sealed for time and eternity in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. Together they raised their three sons, Cornel, Kerry, and Larry.
In 1960, Ross completed the Journeyman Barber's School and started a long-time career barbering at the Mountain Home Airbase and then with his brother-in-law, Orvis Dilworth, in Burley. He made his way to his long-time home in Boise where he opened his own shop on Cherry Lane in 1962. Both Orvis and Ross barbered well into their nineties, passing away only three weeks from each other. Some of their former clients will surely be grateful to see them set up a heavenly shop.
Ross is survived by his wife of 64 years, Maxine; three sons, Cornel (Stephanie), Kerry (Mary), and Larry (Tracey); eight grandsons, one granddaughter, and two and a half great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and step-father, brothers, Alvin Larson, Steven and Merlin Ottley, and sister Geraldine Larson Searle.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 21, 2013 at the Boise Cherry Lane LDS Chapel, 3020 Cherry Lane, Boise. Friends and family visit on Sunday from 5-7 p.m. at Relyea Funeral Chapel, 318 N. Latah St., Boise, and from 10-10:45 on Monday at the church prior to the services. Interment will be at the Idaho State Veteran's Cemetery.
