Thomas Bettger Obituary

Thomas Dale Bettger 1947-2009 Thomas Dale Bettger, 62 died Thursday at St. Alphonsus Hospital as the result of a bicycle accident. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Boise. Tom was born in Vermilion, S.D., the oldest of four children of Victor and Esther Bettger. Tom graduated from North Dakota State University in 1971 with an engineering degree that took five years in order to allow such classes as Shakespeare, Etiquette, and German. An MBA followed several years later from Boise State, but Tom was always a Bison. Tom moved to Idaho to work for Morrison Knudsen, with dreams of traveling the world on construction projects. The reality was that he was sent back to North Dakota to work on a missile project. Before moving back to North Dakota he met Kathy Nelson at a group meeting in the home of his pastor. They started dating that week and their acquaintance grew through the rest of the summer before Kathy moved to Seattle to teach. After many long letters, Christmas vacation in Boise and much time on the phone, Tom proposed over dinner in the Seattle Space needle. They were married in Boise the next summer and their young marriage survived a small town Dakota winter. Back in Boise, Tom's next assignment with MK was the Inga-Shaba electrical transmission line that traversed the Congo. Tom and Kathy moved to Inga, Zaire, where they spent eighteen months with the construction project, followed by several months as volunteers with Mission Aviation Fellowship. Tom accompanied an American pilot on his relief flights in the African Bush where he helped isolated missionaries on their stations. Being raised by a first-rate, do-it-yourself father in a small town with no hardware or auto parts store helped him to use every available resource. After 3 1/2 months travelling Africa, Europe and Asia, Tom and Kathy returned to Boise expecting their first child. Employment with Idaho Power seemed a good choice, and Tom enjoyed the next 33 years in many different roles within the company. Three years after Molly's birth, their son Andrew was born. Family and woodworking hobbies kept him busy at home, and he regularly sought opportunities to help others. He would often ask, "What have you got going on there?" meaning, "I'd sure love to help." Even on vacations visiting family and friends, he often finished others' lingering projects or met an unanticipated need. His giving attitude and servant's heart impacted the lives of all, including his family members, the elderly and many refugees. As a result of their time spent on the Kimpese, Zaire mission station, Tom had a passion for sharing Christ with those whose practical needs he was able to meet. In recent years, Tom and Kathy participated in several church mission ventures, including the Montana Crow Agency, and projects in Rwanda and Nicaragua. He had a real love for the African people and was planning to return for longer periods of time when he retired. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Victor and Esther Bettger. He is survived by his wife, Kathy, and his two children, daughter Molly and husband Patrick Rank of Vancouver, Wash., son Andrew Thomas Bettger of Seattle, Wash., and grandson Graham Thomas Rank; brothers Kenneth and wife Pam, Dan and wife R'Shelle, and sister Cheryl and husband Carl Lyons, many terrific nieces and nephews, and his Uncle Walter Aman of Portland, Ore. and Aunt Antonette Edwards of Oroville, Calif. We're thankful that we can look forward to seeing him soon. Family and friends now smile as we remember his regular words when parting, "If I don't see you in the future, I'll see you in the pasture." The remainder of our lives without him seems short when we look forward to eternity with him in heaven. We will celebrate his life at Boise First Baptist at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday May 27th. In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made to the First Baptist Missionary fund.

Dear Kathy,
I will always think of Tom when we pass by the Inga-Shaba lines. The world needs more people like Tom who had a heart for Africa and whose skills can be used to build this part of the world.
I have fond memories of visiting Tom's family as a child, and we cherish the time we spent in your beautiful home in Idaho. I will certainly miss communicating with him by e-mail.
The Lord grant your grace as you adjust to this trajic loss.

Kathy, Molly, and Andrew, I have very fond memories of Tom and your family at Mountain View School. Tom was always a great parent who spent lots of quality time at school with his children. May your knowledge of his devotion to family give you peace in this time of grief.

Dear Kathy and family. I was so saddened to hear about Tom's premature death. I was watching the news tonite and it mentioned how 3 cyclists had been killed in less than a months in Boise recently. The first thing I thought of was how kind Tom was and how he always took time to ask how "I" was doing. I always saw him as a real people person. The quality that comes to mind regarding Tom was how kind he was and he seemed to have a very soft heart. I promise to pray for you and your family in the future, starting right now.
Sincerely, Sharon Dowell (formerly Sharon Carter)

Kathy,
My heart goes out to you on the passing of Tom. Knowing he is with Our Lord is so awesome. As you probably know I lost Mark 2 1/2 years ago, and knowing he is with Our Precious Lord is so comforting to me. However, this grief journey is so very difficult. The Lord is so very magnificent and His Love surpasses Literally Anything that we must go through. So, may His all so loving arms surround you and hold you during this time.

God saw you getting tired
And a cure was not to be,
So he put his arms around you
And whispered
“Come To Me”
With tearful eyes we watched you,
And saw you pass away,
And although we loved you dearly,
We could not make you stay,
A golden heart stopped beating,
Hard working hands at rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us,
He only takes the best.

Kathy, Molly & Andy,

Jerry and I were saddened when Jeff telephoned us with the news of Tom's death. His love for his Lord and his compassion and practical help for anyone in need will always be remembered. We fondly remember his time with us on a mission trip to Rwanda in January 2006. He seemed to be hand picked by God for our team especially because he could speak French and communicate with the cook at our Guest House.

May God grant you comfort & wrap His loving arms around you in the days and weeks to come.

Dear Kathy ... I was so very sorry to learn that your husband, Tom, was the person involved in the tragic accident last week ... Even though it has been many years, and our lives have taken different roads, please know that you have my sympathy and support as you move into your new life without this lovely man as your partner ... at least physically ... It sounds like he will always be a presence for you, mentally and spiritually, so you will never truly be out of touch with him. He sounds like such a wonderful human being, I'm sorry I didn't know him. Perhaps God just needed some extra help upstairs, and Tom was just the fellow to help Him out ... even though it happened a little sooner than you would have chosen ... With my deepest sympathy.

Kathy,Molly and Andy... I am so very sorry to hear about Tom's passing and your incredible loss. You all were the first friends I had in this town. I will never forget the two months that you allowed me the honor of living in your home just as I was getting started here in Boise. I know that you did the same for many others... your big generous hearts are testimony to the man that Tom was... he will have an enduring legacy through you all.

Kathy, Molly & Andy,

Our love goes out to each of you and you are in our prayers. We are so thankful to know that God is giving you His Peace -- that He will sustain you with His Strength and that the future is truly bright because His Plan is Perfect.

Our most recent visit with Tom was this past September, sitting at Damon and Kay Lynn's dining table with their old sewing machine. Tom was immediately interested in it and looked it over and made a few adjustments to help us get it working better. In Damon and Kay Lynn's sharing with us about working on their house, Tom's advice and help has been often mentioned.

Our love to the Bettger Family, whose love shows from the very first meeting.

Tom was a true leader by example. He was engaged in life, no matter what the circumstance. At his church, which he loved, Tom was deliberate about finding the person in the crowd who was attending for the first time. He truly made them feel welcome. His love of helping others who were struggling or trying to improve their lives was constantly evident in both his words and actions. Best of all, Tom was just a great guy. We will miss him. Our most sincere sympathy goes out to Kathy, Molly, Andrew, and the rest of his extended family.

Dearest Bettger Family,
I was so sad to hear of Tom's accident. My thoughts and prayers are with you as you grieve his passing. I hope in the days, weeks, and months ahead you will have wonderful memories of him that will comfort you. One memory I have of Tom is when he asked Jeff about a suit he was wearing one Sunday. Tom asked if it was made of 'Bird cloth'. Jeff said, what is bird cloth? Tom replied "Cheap". What a character he was, he will be missed by all. I know you take comfort in the fact that he is now experiencing his new life with Jesus.

For all of us who know Tom and his family - our lives are richer! My mind sees Tom being one of the first to welcome all those lives that he's touched throughout the years! Talk about "Well done, my good and faithful servant...." Tom - our lives are truely changed because we were able to 'do life' with you! And Kathy and family - we holds you up and surrounds you in prayer! We all look forward to eternity with Tom and the family. I hope my mansion is on the same culdesac!
