Walter James Nourse
Walter James Nourse, 90, of Boise, died on Thursday, June 13, 2013, at his home.
Walter was born to Frank and Rosalie Unternaher-Nourse on October 6, 1922, in Boise, Idaho.
He attended St. Joseph's Catholic School, later graduating from Meridian High School in 1942. After high school he went on to attend Vo Tech, in auto mechanics, at Boise Jr. College.
Walt later proudly served in the US Army Infantry, Timberwolf Division. He served in the European Theatre in WWII. He received the Bronze Star Medal and was honorably discharged.
Walt married Gloria Mae Drake on June 8, 1946 in Louisville, Kentucky. They lived there a short time before returning to Idaho.
Following military service, Walt worked for the Bureau of Reclamation, then employment with the US Forest Service took them to McCall, Idaho, where he lived until 2011. Walt retired from the Forest Service in 1978.
Although retired, he never stopped working. Walt was an avid outdoorsman. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, and ATV riding. He also enjoyed bike riding, watching NASCAR races on TV, playing bridge, visiting, and caring for his dog Nikki.
His passion for tinkering and fixing things led him to open his own bike shop "Two Wheel Dealer" in McCall. He so loved to tinker.
Walt moved back to Boise in 2011 to be closer to his children as his health began to decline. He lived at Salmon Creek where he made many friends and continued playing bridge.
Walt was an active member of the Catholic Church, a lifetime member of the VFW and past commander. He was also a member of the NFFE, the Payette Lakes Wildlife Federation, the Payette Lakes Snowmobile Club, member of the Bridge Club, and active in the McCall Senior Center.
Walt is survived by a daughter, Korina Smith of Walla Walla, WA; son, Jim (Mary Ellen) of Boise; daughter, Anita (Bob) Kobza; daughter, Denise (Mark) Sullivan, both of Meridian; brother, Richard Nourse of Meridian; brother-in-law, Bill Hallock of Boise; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Walt is preceded in death by his parents; wife Gloria (1997); sisters, Frances and Gracia; and brothers, Frank and Ed Nourse.
