Audrey Bertrand Westfall Wright
91, passed away peacefully in her sleep April 1, 2013. An Indianapolis resident for nearly 70 years, Audrey was born in the heart of Cajun Country, Opelousas, Louisiana, on March 21, 1922.
She graduated from the Academy of the Immaculate Conception in 1940 and recently attended her 72nd high school reunion with seven remaining classmates. She was a student at Louisiana State University/New Orleans Charity Hospital School of Nursing graduating in 1944. About her nursing class she stated, "When we graduated we were fit for army, navy, private duty - you name it. We were proud and we were good."
While at Charity Hospital she met a charming doctor named B. Kemper Westfall, Jr. from Indianapolis. They fell in love, married and lived in Indianapolis for 36 years together raising four children. She later married Dr. J. William Wright, Jr. spending 11 happy years with him. Both husbands preceded her in death.
Audrey, aka Sis, Mom, Mother, Grandma, Nana, the Cage and Cajun Sweetheart, is best remembered for her joie de vivre. She was an avid and winning tennis player from age 14 to 80. She loved to ride and jump horses and rode them on the beaches of both the Atlantic and Pacific, her last ride at age 83. She was an ardent world traveler and at age 63 caught a two-and-a-half foot Arctic char from Tree River in the Arctic Circle. She was a voracious reader and made a mean chicken gumbo.
She was a member of Meridian Hills Country Club and St. Luke Catholic Church and past member of Highland Country Club, Indianapolis Athletic Club, the Columbia Club and the Indianapolis Racquet Club. She belonged to the Children's Museum Guild, Indianapolis Museum of Art, Oriental Arts Society and the Indiana Medical Auxiliary. She was a Brownie Leader, a Girl Scout Licensed Camper, member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a Kentucky Colonel.
But even with all her accomplishments, talents and interests, her children and grandchildren were her greatest and lasting love. She moved mountains for them and loved them with all her heart.
Besides her husbands, her son, B. Kemper Westfall, III, preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Susan Keller, Kathryn Gidwitz (Jim) and Elizabeth Flynn (John); grandchildren, Bonnie Phoenix, Jason Keller (Kristin), Jamee, Brant, Clare and Lydia Gidwitz, Ryan and Garret Flynn; two great granddaughters, Eve and Quinn Keller.
Funeral Mass will be held Friday, April 5th at 11:30 a.m. at St. Luke Catholic Church with calling starting at 10:15 a.m. at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the St. Luke Special Fund. Burial will be private.
