E. Scott Nichols
88, passed on to eternal life on Monday, July 9, 2012 after a short illness. Born March 25, 1924 in Chicago, Scott graduated from Hyde Park High School at the age of 16. While attending Northwestern University, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and completed his degree in Engineering through the Navy's V12 program in 1945. After graduating Northwestern, Scott served the Navy as an Ensign aboard an aircraft carrier in the South Pacific.
In 1952, Scott married Dorothy Mae Clarke of Kokomo, Ind., who preceded him in death in 1984. Their three daughters, Carolyn Nichols, Patricia Poteet (Dane) and Susan Pringle (Patrick) survive. In 1986, Scott married Joan C. Laycock of Indianapolis, who survives along with his stepchildren, Thomas Laycock III (Tracy), Daniel Laycock (Michelle) and Joyce Bevington (Patrick). Scott is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, and was preceded in death by one grandson.
Scott was a renowned Metallurgical Engineer, primarily formulating high-performance alloys for aerospace and industrial engines, earning many awards and recognition for his contributions to the field of metallurgy. After 33 years as a Materials Engineer and Metallurgist with Allison Gas Turbine Division of General Motors, he retired in 1989. He was a Life Member and Fellow of the American Society of Metals International and served as chairman of his local chapter of ASM. Scott was an avid tennis player and fan, earning a USTA Umpire Certification, and playing in USTA Senior Leagues. Scott spent many years volunteering for IPL's "Indy Reads" adult reading program and the American Cancer Society for which he provided patient transportation. He was a 50+ year member of Northwood Christian Church serving as Financial Secretary, deacon and food pantry volunteer. He was also a member of The Service Club of Indianapolis and Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. But by far, Scott's highest priority and greatest joy was his ever-growing family, in whom he constantly invested his wisdom and love.
A Memorial Celebration of Scott's life will be held at Northwood Christian Church, 4550 N. Central Ave., Indianapolis, at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 14. Visitation hours will be held at the church prior to the service, beginning at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to St. Vincent Hospice, Habitat for Humanity, or Northwood Christian Church would be greatly appreciated.
