On June 26th, 1940 he enlisted in the U.S. Army in the Corp of Engineering. Upon completing Officer Candidate School on Jan. 6th, 1943 he was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. On June 5th, 1943 he married his hometown sweetheart Lewella A. McCluskey. Following his tour of duty in Australia, New Guinea, Dutch New Guinea, Philippines and Japan during WWII he was discharged as a Captain on Feb. 14th, 1946.
