Jeanne Smith Atkins

78, of Carmel, passed away with loved ones at her side early Wednesday morning, February 12, 2014. Jeanne was the youngest of four children born to Earl S. and Cathleen Winsor Smith on April 3, 1935, in Providence, RI.

Jeanne, along with her siblings grew up in Rhode Island, where Jeanne was a 1953 graduate of Providence Classical High School. While attending the University of Rhode Island, Jeanne met the man of her dreams, I. Homer Atkins, Jr., a Naval Officer and Vanderbilt University graduate from Columbus, MS. Jeanne's sister, Barbara set them up on a blind date. They fell in love quickly and were married on June 25, 1955. They settled down in Providence, RI.

Eleven months later their first daughter, Deli Ann, was born. Eighteen months later, Linda Jeanne was born. The family of four moved to Greensboro, NC, where Homer began his career with Western Electric Co. Number 3, Cathleen Patricia was born within a few years of this move. Jeanne was a full time Mom and homemaker, busily raising three girls and supporting Homer in his career.

In 1961, the family relocated to Trenton, NJ, enabling Homer to complete his Masters. The family moved to Indianapolis, IN, in 1963 and then to Carmel, IN, in 1977, which has been Jeanne's home ever since.

After raising her three girls, Jeanne was a teacher's assistant for Carmel-Clay Schools for 15 years, retiring in 1998. Jeanne loved dogs, yard work, gardening, golfing, traveling, bridge and most importantly time spent with family and friends. She was very active in St. Alban's Episcopal Church, where she was a member for over 50 years. St. Alban's is a very special place to her and all of the family; as all three daughters were married there.

Jeanne's husband, I. Homer Atkins, Jr., of 42 years, passed away on June 15, 1997. Jeanne is survived by her loving daughters, Deli A. Schleiffarth (Steve), Linda A. Gillette (Kyle) and Cathy A. Kennedy (Matt); dog and best friend, Buddy; grandchildren, Ashley and Corey Gillette, Scott Schleiffarth, Lynne Schleiffarth Burks (Andrew) and Christine and Lia Kennedy; brother, Robert W. Smith (Phyllis); sister, Barbara S. Schmidt (Herb); and sister-in-law, Nancy Smith. Her brother, Earl S. Smith, Jr., preceded her in death.

In lieu of flowers, Jeanne and family encourage you to follow in Jeanne's ways and donate to either St. Alban's Episcopal Church and/or Hamilton County Humane Society.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 22, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Alban's Episcopal Church, 4601 N. Emerson Ave., Indianapolis. There will be a calling before the service from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. in the parish hall of the church, with a brunch provided. This will be a time to celebrate Jeanne's life, so please join us whether in person or in spirit.
