Pastor Mary H. Miller
83, of Indianapolis, passed away on February 6, 2014. She was born January 17, 1931 in Sylvania, Georgia to the late William S. and Clara M. (Striggles) Lawton. Survivors include her brother, William S. (Renee) Lawton, Jr; her children, Everett T. (Loretta Cheairs) Lewis, Claryce V. (Cornell) Burris, Sybil J. Hannon, Rev. LaTrelle E. ( Rev. Marion) Easterling; eight grandchildren, Satin Crable, Holly Leach, Rachman (Olympia Scott) Crable, Sr., Adrian (LaToya) Lewis, Sr., Asaad Crable, Selena Hannon, Garrett Miller, Miles Easterling; 7 great grandchildren, Sean Onai Schumpert, BreAzia Richardson, Jeremiah Hannon Ellis, Adrian Lewis, Jr., Malakai Ellis, Landon Tubbs, Rachman Crable, Jr.; beloved niece, Yolanda (Andrew) Phillips, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; and her special caregivers, Jean Weaver, Nina and Bob Butler, and Sara Siegman. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter J. Miller; two sisters and three brothers. Mary graduated from Fort Valley State College in Georgia, University of Indianapolis, and University of Wisconsin at Madison, with degrees in Fine Arts and Banking. Mary began her career as a teacher. In 1958, she became a teller at the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) Finance Center. In 1970 she became a banker and retired from the Indiana National Bank as a Sr. Vice President in 1996. "Pastor Mary" known to many, "Ms Mary" to others, became a local licensed pastor in 1997, serving first at Faith United Methodist Church for 5 years, and then at Grace United Methodist Church for another 7 years before retiring in 2009. Pastor Mary was a member of the Lawrence United Methodist Church (Bell Choir) and previously belonged to University United Methodist Church (Chancel Choir, UMW). She served on various boards in her life, including: General Board of Pensions, Metro Ministries, Conference Council on Ministries, Brightwood Community Center to name a few. Visitation will be held at Lawrence United Methodist Church, 5200 N. Shadeland Ave., Indianapolis, on Friday, February 14, 2014 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Services will be held on Saturday, February 15, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in Lawrence United Methodist Church.
