Mary Sue Best
82, passed away at home on November 5, 2013. Born in Jackson, MS, on December 18, 1930, to Joseph and Susie Smith, she is survived by husband, David and daughter, Melanie. Mary Sue was a graduate of Millsaps College (B.A.) and University of Mississippi (M.A.). A beloved teacher to young people and adults, she launched her teaching career in Greenville, MS, where she taught high school Spanish. Subsequently she served on the faculty at Mississippi College. In Indianapolis, she taught English at John Herron School of Art and Purdue University Extension, and was an instructor in creative writing at Oasis. Also a professional writer and book editor, Mary Sue wrote for a number of publications including the Christian Science Monitor, Saturday Evening Post and Indianapolis Star. She was a member and past president of the Indianapolis Woman's Club and member of the Fortnightly Literary Club, American Association of University Women, Caroline Scott Harrison DAR Chapter, Phi Mu sorority, Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, Southern Club and Breakfast Optimist Club of Indianapolis. Services will be at 2 p.m., Monday, November 11, at Flanner & Buchanan - Broad Ripple , 1305 E. Broad Ripple Ave., with visitation from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the
