Obituary Condolences

Mildred Bernhardt Long

95, wife of Clarence W. Long, died July 17. She graduated from Evansville Bosse High School, attended McMurray College for one year and completed Indiana University with a B.S. degree in Business.

Mildred was married to Clarence for 69 years until he died in 2009. They met as undergraduates, graduated in 1939, and moved to Indianapolis in 1940. An enthusiastic, life-long I.U. football and basketball fan, she faithfully accompanied Clarence to every game they could get to with their season tickets.

She was appointed by Gov. Otis Bowen and served for ten years as a member of the Indiana State Arts Commission. She was also active with the Indianapolis Museum of Art serving as a docent for many years, a member of the Auxiliary to the Boys and Girls clubs of Indianapolis and numerous school activities as her boys were growing up. She was granted a prestigious Sagamore of the Wabash by Gov. Bowen.

Known for her gentle kindness and persistent sweet temper, she has been missed during her many years battling Alzheimers Disease and will continue to be missed by all who were fortunate to know her.

She is survived by two sons, Dr. W. Randall (Susan) of Indianapolis, and David John (Melissa) of New Jersey. There are five grandchildren, Michael F. Long (Sanae), Clare B. Gross (Robert), Tracy Long (Tucker Partel), Jennifer Long and Christopher Long, and four great grandchildren.

Many thanks go to the staff at The Forum at the Crossing for the kind and compassionate care they gave to Mildred for several years and, before that, to Clarence. They made this journey easier for all of us.

Services will be held at Crown Hill Cemetery Gothic Chapel. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to: Pleasant View Lutheran Church, 801 W. 73rd St., Indianapolis, Ind., or of Greater Indiana, 50 91st St., Suite 100, Indianapolis, Indiana 46240.
