Richard Stephen Payne
63, of Port Angeles, passed away on September 27, 2013. Born in Saginaw, Mich., to John and Frances (Harter) Payne, he grew up in Indianapolis, graduated from Broad Ripple High School, attended Ball State University, Indiana University and Peninsula College. Richard left Indiana at 19, and lived and surfed in Hawaii; then went to Australia, where he found work in Sydney at the Royal Botanical Gardens.
Later he moved to the Northwest Territory, where he worked on a cattle ranch in the outback. Upon returning to Indiana he married Sharon Hartley. They moved to Montana, where Richard worked in the timber industry, and on cattle ranches in Montana and then in Idaho, where their daughter Valerie was born. The family moved back to Indiana for a few years and then back to Washington when he took a job with a timber company on the Olympic Peninsula Richard and Sharon later divorced.
He remained in Port Angeles for the rest of his life. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity, Port Angeles Business Association, and attended Independent Bible Church. He passed away from complications of surgery.
He is survived by his daughter, Valerie (Mark) Custodio; brothers, Rob Payne (Steve Katona), and John (Sue) Payne; nephew, Carl Payne; aunt, Betty (Tom) Garrison; and many cousins and family. He was preceded in death by his father and mother; uncles, Blaine Harter, Joe (Marge) Harter, and Jack (Doris) Payne; aunt, Dorthea (Kenny) Knapp. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
