Rita L. Fowler

Passed away peacefully in her sleep on July 3, 2013 at the age of 92. She was born to Angie and L. B. Downing on September 9, 1920 in Elsberry, Missouri.

Rita attended Iberia Junior College, Indiana University, and the University of Illinois, earning a Bachelor of Library Science degree. She worked in the libraries of Indiana University, State of Indiana, and the Indiana School of Dentistry.

Rita met her husband, Hubert F. Fowler, at a YMCA dance in Indianapolis and they were married on May 20, 1950. Rita was active in the parent organization of Indianapolis Public School 84 throughout her children's early years. She was an active member of First Meridian Heights Presbyterian Church assuming a variety of roles such as deacon, president of the women's circle, church librarian, as well as volunteering in the church office. Rita enjoyed sewing "puppy pillows" for the local children's hospitals in Indianapolis.

Rita was a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority at Indiana University and remained active in the alumni group making lifelong friends. She was an avid reader, bridge player, and loved a good game of Scrabble. Her kind, giving spirit will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. She was humble and dignified in both life and death.

Rita was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Hubert F. Fowler, and her two brothers, Louis B. and James D. Downing. Rita is survived by her children, Janet F. (Jim) Gould, David S. (Robin) Fowler and Brian K. (Cathy) Fowler, as well as her seven grandchildren (Kate Lange, Scott Gould, Ashley Fowler, Ryan Fowler, Andrew Fowler, Mike Fowler, and Graham Fowler) and two great grandsons.

The family would like to thank the nursing staff at the Forum at the Crossing as well as the hospice team from Heartland Hospice for the loving, personal care Rita was given. Special thanks go to Brenda Creighton of Life's Touch Home Healthcare, for the exceptional care, companionship, and love that she gave to Rita on a daily basis.

Celebration of Rita's life will be at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, July 12, 2013 in First Meridian Heights Presbyterian Church, 4701 North Central Avenue. Visitation will be from Noon until the service time in the church. Entombment will follow in Crown Hill Cemetery.
