Robert Austin "Hutch" Hutchinson

died from a brief and courageous struggle with kidney cancer on August 10, 2014. Whether you knew him as Dr. Hutchinson, Bob, Doc, or just "Hutch," his generous spirit, infectious laughter, colorful sense of humor, and general zest for life were enjoyed by all who knew him.

Born on June 25, 1951 in Vinton, Iowa to Durward (deceased) and Colleen Hutchinson, "Bobby," as he was known back then, was four years younger than his "much older" sister, Linda (Hutchinson) Crane, and he never missed an opportunity to remind her of that fact.

After graduating a semester early from North Central High School in Indianapolis in 1970, Hutch attended Indiana University for both undergraduate and Optometry school, graduating in 1976. He moved to Marion and opened his optometric practice, Marion Family Optometry, in 1977. In 1995, he expanded his practice to include a second office in Wabash, IN.

While working to establish his practice in the Marion community, Hutch met Terri (Phillips) Hutchinson, the woman who would become his wife of 35 years, on a blind date. The pair proved to be a perfect match, as Terri brought elegance to his impulsivity and Hutch brought adventure to her punctiliousness. They had two children, Shelby (Hutchinson) Schuh [married to Aaron Schuh in 2010 and the mother of two girls - Elliot Cailyn (9) and Austyn Marie (almost 3) and stepmom to Dylan Augustus (8)] and Ryan Austin Hutchinson [married to Sarah (Sobczak) Hutchinson in 2008 and proud parents of Michael Robert (2)].

He had a passion for optometry and an unwavering commitment to providing his patients with quality affordable eye care, as well as an impeccable talent at finding the humor in life - all of it - even in the times that were the most trying.

Hutch served the community in a variety of capacities; local club memberships throughout the years included: Marion Downtown Rotary (past President), The Aero Club (past President), The Elks, & Meshingomesia Country Club. He was a supporter of the Civic Theater, Marion Philharmonic Orchestra, the Community Foundation and projects in and around the downtown area.

A wake will be held at Owen-Weilert-Duncan Funeral Home , Marion, IN, from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. on August 13. A funeral mass will be held at St. Paul Catholic Church, Marion, IN, at 11 a.m. on August 14. Memorials may be made to St. Paul Catholic Church and the Community Foundation, Marion, IN. Hutch left behind one final charge that he requested to be delivered upon his passing: Rock on.
